About 80% of my work at my last job was magazine creation. I was responsible for the graphic design of these 7 magazines:
Home Shop Machinist
This is a metal-working magazine that is bi-monthly and is 72 pages each issue.
Machinists Workshop
This is another metal-working magazine that is bi-monthly and 52 pages each issue.
Just Labs
This is a dog magazine about the Labrador Retriever and is bi-monthly and is 52 pages each issue.
Retriever Journal
This is another dog magazine focused on hunting. It is a bi-monthly publication and is 52 pages for each issue.
MMOPA
This magazine focused on the Malibu M-Class Owners & Pilots Association and is bi-monthly and is 52 pages each issue.
Spruce Creek Update
This is a magazine featuring a gated fly-in community near Daytona Beach called Spruce Creek. This is a monthly publication that is about 24-36 pages.
LC Smith
This is a magazine that features the LC Smith gun owners association. This is a quarterly Magazine and is around 36 pages.
I do realize the number of pages/publications that I handled seems like a lot. Especially compared to other artists. But I’ve spent a lot of time in automating using scripts and GREP to not only make my typography production fast but also extremely accurate. The above image is a spread from the King Air magazine. I designed this September issue for a colleague-designer, while she was away getting married. This was such a fun publication to fill in on!
Other Magazines I’ve worked on in the past:
Twin and Turbine
This is a magazine that focuses on twin-engine aircraft, its owners, and pilots. This is a 52-page magazine and is monthly. I spent about 7 years on this publication but had to let it go to another in-house designer because he needed work to learn the trade.
The Pointing Dog Journal
This is another dog magazine that focuses on the upland hunting dog. This publication is bi-monthly and is 52 pages.
I spent several years on this publication but had to make more time for doing associations and management work.
Detroit Medical News
This is a quarterly publication that focuses on the Wayne County Medical Society of Southeast Michigan this was about 36 pages. A small publication that was external, I worked on this one for a few years until the association decided to take the design back to cut costs. Won several design awards with this publication.
ABS– American Bonanza Society
This is a 72-page magazine that discusses everything about the ABS airplanes and the owners and pilots. I taught an intern whom we hired to work on this publication until she left VP. I then took it on as my own publication for about 3 years.
